The Apollo 11 mission specifically chose the Mare Tranquillitatus, better known as “The Sea of Tranquility,” for humanity’s first landing spot on the moon.

Once thought to be an ocean on the moon, its smooth surface is a safe harbor in an otherwise crater-filled area.

Here on Earth, we can observe the Sea of Tranquility with the naked eye.

This evening, we observed it unobstructed, and complemented by the tranquil seas of the Atlantic coast.
